Glossary of technical terminology

2D
Flat two dimensional graphics. Logos and banners are usually 2D. Some 2d logos have 3D source assets.

2.5D
A 2D image with depth assigned to each pixel.

3D
Usually refering to graphics that are created with 3D software, a 3D logo can be seen from different angles.

8bit
256 colours

16bit
65,536 mixed colours

24bit
16,777,216 mixed colours

32bit
A 24bit image with the addition of an alpha channel (8bit greyscale)

asset
Valuable data, can refer to complete work or source data used to create a final result.

banner
Commonly refering to a wide advert space, which are usually at the top and bottom of webpages.

bitmap
Image, or image file such as a JPG, GIF or a BMP

CGI
Computer graphics imagery

colour depth
The amount of bits per pixel, the higher the colour depth, the more mixed colours the image contains.

compression
Compression is a process that you apply to a file to reduce the filesize of the file. Compression allows data to be transmitted using less bandwidth.

composition
Arranging elements of an image so that they read well.

compositing
The act of combining various imagery into a single image.

Dreamweaver
Website authoring software by Macromedia.

Flash
Shockwave flash, vector graphics software by Macromedia

format
How the data is saved in the file

FPS
a. First person shooter, a style of game where you shoot and interact with the world through your character's eyes
b. Frames per second

Freehand
Vector based graphics software by Macromedia

geometry
A mesh of data used to represent a 3D object.

GFX
short form of graphics

grayscale
A black and white image (usually 8bit)

image
Picture or graphic, usually from a file

J2ME
Java Mobile Edition (for limted devices)

J2SE
Java for desktop PCs primarily.

Java
Language that is designed to be platform independent, and will work on multiple operating systems with the same code.

locator
A point in space specified by a locator or a null.

lossy
A file format in which data degrades every time you save a change. JPG is the best example.

normal map
An image file that contains information about the detail on geometry.

null
A point in space specified by a locator or a null.

parallax shader
A type of shader that simulates geometric depth.

patch
A type of geomtry that has bezier handles defining the surface.

pitch
A sales pitch.

Polygon
A traingle or series of triangles that make up a 3d object.

render
Usually a final output produced by an application, such as a 3D application. The render process add special effects and details and does any necessary computation.

rendering
The process of creating a final output from an application, such as a scene in an 3D application.

shader
Commonly a program that specifies how geometry should be rendered.

Shockwave Flash
Vector graphics software by Macromedia.

spline
A mathmatical curve between a set of points which allow artists to create perfect curves.

sprite
A small bitmap which can move around, similar to a mouse pointer.

Swift3d
software which creates 2d renders of 3d objects.

SFX
Short form of special effects or sound effects.

texture
Commonly an image applied to a 3d model giving colour, but can also be used to add actual texture through the use of normal maps.

Truecolor
24bit or 32bit colour, allowing 16,777,216 mixed colours.

Vecta3d
Software which creates 2d renders of 3d objects.

vectors
The term `vector` usually refers to non-bitmap math based graphics, such as 3d graphics.

vertex
A point in space, 3 of which make a triangle or polygon.
